General Information

The Death Valley '49ers Educational Fund contributes to programs that provide opportunities for urban youth to explore, enjoy and learn about Death Valley National Park.
In the fall of 2007, Death Valley National Park staff began reaching out to schools that have limited opportunity to visit the park without assistance. The National Park Service along with the Death Valley Natural History Association developed the Death Valley R.O.C.K.S. Program (Recreation Outdoors Curriculum for Kids though Study).
Death Valley R.O.C.K.S. brings students from Los Angeles and Las Vegas to Death Valley National Park for a multi-day camping trip and interpretive learning experience. Kids who wouldn't normally be able to visit a national park enjoy a truly starry night sky and days of environmental education in Death Valley's natural "classroom." Park Rangers provide full-time support to these students including visits into their classrooms weeks before the visit to prepare for the trip.
Goals:
- Create opportunities for personal growth and development by linking students from different cultures, foster respect of self and others, and provide participants with outdoor skills and leadership opportunities.
- Promote appreciation and protection of the natural environment through outdoor education.
