Modernization of Sunset Campground
by Nancy Wizner and Ken Lengner

J.T. Reynolds (DVNP Superintendent),
Nancy Wizner (Chief Ranger),
Wayne Badder (Chief of Maintenance), and
Joe Adams (Sunset Campground Host),

attended the Death Valley ‘49ers Board of Directors
meeting in January to explain the modernization
of Sunset Campground.

The new campground layout features 252 spaces
that are now 23’ wide to accommodate today's
slide-outs and are canted at a 45 degree angle
to facilitate back in parking.

There are also two fire rings to be made available
to everyone in the campground.

Safety has been enhanced by 12’ wide,
one-way lanes between parking spaces
and around the perimeter of the campground.

The larger spaces and one-way lanes result in
fewer spaces because the overall size
of Sunset Campground is constrained
by the 2002 Death Valley National Park
General Management Plan which is
predicated on required compliance with the
National Environmental Protection Act.

There are a number of designated
Sunset Campground overflow areas which
probably will only be filled during Encampment.

Nearby Texas and Furnace Creek Campgrounds
provide additional parking as does the
Stovepipe Wells Campground.

Come early, get one of these new spaces,
and have more time to visit with friends and
enjoy Death Valley and the Death Valley '49ers
